Changing your genes after conception
A new report from the Genetics and Public Policy Center finds that "recent rapid advances in stem cell research and genetic technologies make if far more likely than generally thought that human germline genetic modification (HGGM) — permanent modifications of the human genome, for example to correct a genetic defect or to enhance a human trait — could be accomplished."
"Germline modification would involve introducing a new genetic sequence into a person's genome that could be passed on to future generations. To become a permanent change in the genome, however, these changes must take place in the germline cells — the eggs and sperm — or very soon after fertilization in a very early embryo. That way, succeeding generations derived from modified eggs, sperm, or embryos would, in theory, carry the genetic changes. This has been accomplished successfully in some animals.
"A change or modification could replace a defective gene with a 'normal' gene, add a gene function that did not exist before, or affect the function of an existing, resident gene by turning it on or off. The report notes that these permanent changes could be used for therapeutic purposes — to cure or ameliorate a disease in future generations — or for enhancement of non-health related characteristics."

Hi there,
Thanks for putting up such interesting article about conception. It is very insightful with relates to infertility.
Especially, I like this part..

"-or enhancement of non-health related characteristics" .... Is it possible to give someone superhuman strength yet? Possibly the ability to jump 50 feet? If so, sign me up.
